MANGROVE EDUCATION TRAINING FOR PEER EDUCATORS/TEACHERS:

 

The pictures show part of the activities of Coastal Life Initiative in community building project on Mangrove Education Network in Cross River State.

 

This particular project took place in Ikang community in Akpabuyo L.G.A of Cross River State.

 

The target group was the Youth and Students of the community as well as Teachers of the different community schools in Ikang.

 

The aim was basically:

- The creation of Awareness and enlightenment campaign on Mangrove conservation and biodiversity in the area and other part of Niger Delta.

-Generating greater understanding of mangrove ecosystem, importance, threats and providing the required skills needed for effective conservation/protection of this unique ecosystem.

-There was also an aspect of gender issues (HIV/AIDS, Gender and good governance) in the society in relation to mangrove Ecosystem protection.

 

The outcome was excellent as the Teachers and Youth came to the knowledge of the wealth of usefulness of mangrove ecosystem including;

1.     The ability to identify and describe the physical features and natural habitat of mangrove species.

2.     The ability to identify and explain the mangrove forest structure

3.     The ability to identify explain the different species of mangrove

4.     The ability to identify and explain the biodiversity in the mangrove supratidal zone

5.     The ability to identify and examine the role of mangrove environment to human.

6.     The ability to identify and explain the activities, issues and processes that threaten mangrove ecosystem.

7.     Establishing and applying proper systems of mangrove conservation/ protection.

 

Coastal Life Initiative works on the project alongside with ABGREMO another indigenous NGO in Cross River State.

 

The Coastal Life Initiative Resource Team Dr. Francis Nwosu and Edet Akpan assisted in the  Ikang beach environment lecture and identification of the mangrove species and possible threat to the mangrove ecosystem (Pictures below).
